The first appartus purchased by the fire compnay was a chemical engine called the "Baxter" which consisted of two 50-gallon tanks on a horse-drawn vehicle. The tanks contained a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and water which was activated by a chemical reaction when adding sulfuric acid. This was backed by a small Baxter Steam Engine (the cyllindracal tower behind the driver)-- a portable steam engine invented by Willima Baxter in Newark, NJ in 1868. This piece of equipment was purchased on March 14, 1903 for $350, and stored in the barn of Alfred Matthews. It is shown here in 1906.

The Company's first motorized apparatus were purchased in 1918: a Hahn 500-gallon pumper (left) and a Hahn chemical hose wagon(right)
