Haddon Township Historical Photographs Bettlewood School / Clyde S. Jennings School (School No. 6) |
| The Bettlewood School was constructed in 1927. The Bettlewood P.T.A. was organized on September 20, 1927 with Mrs. Sauder as its first president. The school was originally known as School No. 6. and took the name Bettlewood near the beginning. Miss Ina L. Ashton was the school's first principal. She stayed in that position until 1930 when she moved over to the newly constructed Thomas A. Edison School (School No. 3) to assume the principalship there. Miss Naomi Marton (later Mrs. Robinson)who served until 1960. From 1960 to 1966, the position was held by by Mrs. Marguerite Bennett who moved over to the principalship at the Strawbridge Avenue School. In January 1960, the Bettlewood School was formally renamed the Clyde S. Jennings School after a school official. Built the same year as Stoy School, much of the time in recent years, both school have been served by the same principal. Jennings School is located at 100 East Cedar Avenue in the old "Bettlewood" section of Haddon Township. The "Bettlewood" section is named for William Bettle, Jr. who, in 1865, owned 92 acres in that area. Bettle's house still stands at 9 E. Holly Avenue. |
